Notes
  • This was one of two 2017-18 North American Regionals to not have a livestream (San Jose was the other).
  • According to Sam Chen, most top west coast players were running Giratina XY184 regardless of their deck, fearful of Greninja BREAK.
  • Pablo Meza was able to make Day 2 with a 5-0-4 record after starting 2-0-4 -- he then proceeded to win the tournament! It was his first Top 8 appearance of the 2017-18 season and his first Regional win since April 2016's Mexico City Regionals.
  • Meza and Ryan Allred both made their third consecutive Day 2 appearance at Regionals they attended. Allred's actually came on three consecutive weekends.

Decklists

Hale Obernolte, 2nd - Gardevoir-GX
Player notes:
  • "Playing 2 of both [Eevee and Remoraid] is really dual purpose. For one, it dramatically reduces the chances of not having access to Octillery or Sylveon in a game. If you only run 1-1, prizing either piece means you don't have access to that evolution for most/all of the game, especially if you prize the basic... By running 2-1 of both, you only lose access to an evolution line if you prize the stage 1 (because prizing both of the basics is very unlikely), giving you more consistent access to your stage 1's. The other purpose is that running 2 of the basics gives you a much better chance of drawing into them naturally. Generally speaking, my first Brigette usually grabs 2 Ralts and an Eevee, meaning i don't automatically have access to Remoraid. By running 2 Eevee and 2 Remoraid you really increase the odds of having 1 naturally so you can grab the other along with 2 Ralts with Brigette. It also makes your setup when you cant Brigette early more consistent"
    • "Remoraids aren't necessarily dead if you prize Octillery, because it's still very nice to draw into Remoraid naturally, bench it, then evolve it when you hit Octillery off of prizes.... Actually, the night before the tournament I was running 2-2 Sylveon and 1-1 Octillery, but I found myself not having access to Octillery in a very large portion of my games, and in most cases the extra Sylveon was absolutely useless (especially because with Energy Evolution you don't need to draw into it naturally), so the morning of I ended up cutting 2nd Sylveon for 2nd Remoraid and I'm very glad that I did. If you can find the space 2nd Sylveon definitely helps consistency a bit, but not enough to warrant the slot in the deck (for me at least)"
  • "Parallel City's utility depends on the matchup. It can be really difficult for [Volcanion] to hit the right numbers while locked to 3 on bench. Against ho-oh salazzle reducing their damage by 20 makes it very awkward for them to hit the numbers they need to, especially since they run few field blowers. In this matchup getting 1 down is very important, but the 2nd isn't always necessary (but it is nice if they ever field blower the first).
Against greninja your win condition is basically entirely dependent on parallel city. Especially if you can lock them to 3 before they're able to water duplicates it makes it very hard for them to get a good setup. The win condition for this matchup is basically go aggressive with sylveon while locking them with parallel, plea gxing when they get full evolutions out, then continuing to take prizes and hope you can close it out. In this matchup 2nd parallel city is incredibly useful because it gives you another one to use after they either field blower or brooklet hill over your first, and also because you draw into it naturally more often to lock them before they can water duplicates. Running 2 was a big part of why i was able to beat ninja in top 8.
Against mirror parallel city can be very good if you get it early, but not so much late game. Having 2 doubles your chances of being able to get it early to lock them before they brigette, but since you usually want to brigette on your first turn you don't get to see many cards, so even with 2 hitting the early parallel is pretty unlikely. In this matchup, having 2 is nice, but definitely not necessary.
Against Drampa Garb locking them to 3 isn't very important, but it's another out to clear po town, which makes it really good.
Other than that it's uses are somewhat minimal, although being locked to 3 can hurt most any deck, and reducing golispod's damage by 20 can be really nice as well. The 2nd parallel is definitely a luxury that can be cut if you want to make space for something, but i think it was worth the slot. I would almost certainly always run 1 because you always have it as an option to grab with sylveon early on
